The Alfred Duma Local Municipality hosted a Spelling Bee Mega Competition Challenge at the Ladysmith Civic Hall on Wednesday, 9 September 2026 in commemoration of Literacy Month. The competition hosted 78 Grade 5 learners from 35 schools under the jurisdiction of the municipality as part of its commitment to youth development and promotion of literacy.
The competition, championed by the libraries section under the Community and Social Services Department of the municipality, was sponsored by One Stop Computer Stationers. The spelling bee forms part of the municipality’s efforts to promote literacy, instil a culture of reading and provide learners with a platform to showcase and enhance their spelling, vocabulary and language proficiency. The competition was conducted in both IsiZulu and English, with 39 learners competing in IsiZulu and 39 learners competing in English.
The Alfred Duma Local Municipality Mayor Cllr Z.J Sibisi congratulates all the winners. “Literacy is the foundation of opportunity. When we invest in literacy programmes, we are not just teaching people to read we are opening doors to knowledge. This Literacy Month, let us commit to building a community where reading and writing is a culture and everyone can thrive through the power of words. I believe that investing in literacy is investing in the future of our children and the community. Through programs such as the Spelling Bee, we are nurturing a generation of reading and learning.”
