EMERGENCY COMMUNICATION UPDATE - Concern over open flames in veld and mountainous areas

Issued on 29 August 2026 at 9:00

Msukaligwa Local Municipality (MLM) Fire Service is raising serious concern about the lighting of candles and open fires in veld and mountainous areas, particularly as dry and windy conditions increase the risk of runaway veld and mountain fires.

Open flames, including candles used during religious or spiritual practices, can easily be overturned or spread by wind and ignite dry vegetation. Fires that start in remote mountainous areas can become extremely difficult and dangerous for emergency services to contain, while also threatening surrounding communities, properties, infrastructure and natural environments.

Firefighters acknowledges the right of religious and spiritual groups to conduct lawful religious practices. However, open flames must be used responsibly and in accordance with applicable fire-safety requirements, permits and restrictions.

Engagement with religious groups

As part of a preventative approach, MLM Firefighters will engage with religious and spiritual groups operating in the area to raise awareness of the dangers associated with candles and open fires in veld and mountainous environments.

The aim is to work collaboratively with religious leaders and practitioners to identify safer ways of conducting religious practices while reducing the risk of devastating fires.

Members of the public are urged to: - Never leave a candle, fire or other open flame unattended. - Avoid lighting fires or candles in dry vegetation or areas exposed to strong winds. - Comply with all fire restrictions, permits and applicable regulations. - Extinguish all flames completely before leaving an area. - Report any unattended or uncontrolled fire immediately to the relevant emergency services.

To report fire-related incidents, contact the Msukaligwa Fire Emergency Call Centre on 072 883 8528.
