King Sabata Dalindyebo (KSD) Municipality continues to advance its Local Geographical Name Change Programme, aimed at promoting transformation, honouring individuals who have contributed to the country’s history, and preserving the legacy of those who paved the way for future generations.
The second phase of the programme focused on the renaming of four streets in Mthatha, which were officially unveiled on 22 October 2026. The streets and their new names are as follows:
The initiative, championed by the Office of the KSD Speaker, Cllr N. Siyo-Sokutu, was welcomed by the families of those honoured through the renaming process. The families expressed their appreciation for the initiative and called on the Municipality to ensure that the name change programme goes hand in hand with efforts to restore Mthatha to its former glory while improving the quality of life of KSD communities.
Delivering the keynote address, Member of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature, Honourable M. Qoboshiyane, emphasised that Council has a responsibility to facilitate the changing of local geographical names as part of the broader transformation agenda. He highlighted the importance of rewriting the history of King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality in a manner that recognises and honours individuals who have made significant contributions to society.
Hon. Qoboshiyane further encouraged the Municipality to continue making strides towards improving Mthatha’s image and creating an environment that reflects the town’s historical significance and potential for growth and development.
In his closing remarks, KSD Chief Whip, Cllr B. Mlanjeni, reflected on the progress made by the municipal leadership in advancing development and improving the image of Mthatha. He acknowledged the town’s past challenges with cleanliness and noted that efforts had been made to improve the situation.
Cllr Mlanjeni further highlighted upcoming development initiatives expected to stimulate the local economy and create employment opportunities. Among these is the Bedford City development, which will incorporate the Botha Sigcawu Building, a prominent landmark that was destroyed by fire.
The inclusion of the building in the Bedford City development, through an initiative involving the Department of Public Works, offers an opportunity to fast-track its refurbishment and bring the landmark back to life. This is particularly significant given public expectations that its restoration could take a considerable amount of time. Its inclusion in the development therefore raises hope for the refurbishment of an important part of Mthatha’s built heritage while contributing to the town’s broader revitalisation.
The event was attended by representatives from Walter Sisulu University, including Councillor Advocate Tembeka Ngcukayitobi SC and Vice-Chancellor and Principal Dr Thandi Mgwebi, as well as Eastern Cape Geographical Names Committee member Cllr N. Gcingca and other key stakeholders.
Through the Local Geographical Name Change Programme, KSD Municipality reaffirms its commitment to transformation, historical recognition and the preservation of local heritage, while continuing to work towards the development and revitalisation of Mthatha for the benefit of its communities.
